What to Look for in a Trusted Fencing Contractor: A Practical Guide
- Pinned on
- Runs for
- 2 min

A new fence usually stays put for many years, which makes the choice of installer more important than the choice of stain colour. Posts set too shallow, footings poured into the wrong soil or a boundary measured from the wrong peg can turn a tidy garden upgrade into a long-running headache. Fortunately, most of the warning signs, and most of the reassuring ones, appear well before the first hole is dug.
Start with your own brief
Before ringing anyone, write down what the fence needs to achieve. Privacy for a back garden, a secure run for a dog, a pool barrier and a low decorative edge along the street each bring different heights, materials and rules. Note the length of every section, any slopes, the gates you want and how much upkeep you are willing to do each year. With that brief in hand, each contractor answers the same questions and the quotes become far easier to compare.
Questions for the site visit
- How long have you been building fences locally, and can I see recent jobs like mine?
- Which licences or registrations apply here, and can you show current liability insurance?
- Who takes care of approvals, boundary checks and talking with neighbours?
- How will the slope, soil and drainage on this block affect post depth and footings?
- What happens to the old fence and the excavated soil when you finish?
- What does the warranty cover for workmanship, and what for materials?
Notice how the answers are given as well as what they contain. Someone who walks the entire boundary, measures carefully and explains trade-offs without hurrying is often showing you how the rest of the project will run.
Comparing quotes side by side
| Item | What a clear quote spells out |
|---|---|
| Scope | Lengths, heights, number of gates and any retaining work |
| Materials | Product range, finish, post size and fixings |
| Site work | Removal of the old fence, footings and clean-up |
| Timing | Likely start date and expected duration |
| Payment | Deposit, progress stages and what triggers the final invoice |
The lowest number is not automatically the best deal. A slightly higher price that includes removal, proper footings and a written warranty may cost less across the life of the fence.
Material advice you can rely on
A trustworthy installer explains the strengths of each option instead of steering everyone towards one product. Timber feels warm and is easy to patch but needs regular treatment. Steel and composite systems suit certain modern homes. Aluminium is a favourite near the coast and around pools because it resists corrosion and asks for little maintenance, and an experienced aluminium fencing company can walk you through panel styles, colours and gate hardware that suit the property.
Whatever you choose, keep the paperwork together: the accepted quote, any variations agreed along the way and the warranty terms. Clear records protect both sides and make the final walk-through quick and friendly.
